Sophie Chalk is a NYC-based fine art photographer, portrait artist, prop designer and printmaker from Australia. With over a decade of film and alternative process darkroom experience, she is best known for her contemporary archive of tintype portraits representing variations of the LGBTQIA+ experience.
Her photographic approach centers Romanticism, softness and transcendence. Offering her studio and practice as a site of play and resistance for those seeking to be seen and witnessed.
Seamlessly blending aesthetics from the 19th Century through to the 1980s with elements of fantasy and a distinctive, contemporary flair. The resulting images almost seem to exist outside of time, while simultaneously prompting questions around the functions and validity of institutionally held archives.
